📱 Student Technology & Digital Device Use Policy

Sandusky Community Schools | Public Communication Policy

Purpose

This policy outlines the acceptable and responsible use of technology and personal digital devices by students across all grade levels at Sandusky Community Schools. We are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and focused learning environment while embracing the educational benefits of digital tools.

Scope

This policy applies to all students in grades K–12 and covers use of:

  • District-issued devices (e.g., Chromebooks, tablets)

  • Personal digital devices (e.g., cell phones, smartwatches)

  • Internet access on school property or during school-sponsored events

General Guidelines

  • Learning First: Technology should enhance—not disrupt—learning. Devices are to be used only when permitted by teachers or staff for educational purposes.

  • Respectful Use: Students must treat school devices with care, respect privacy, and use appropriate language online.

  • Internet Safety: All internet use is filtered and monitored. Students must not attempt to bypass filters or access inappropriate content.

  • Personal Devices: These must be silenced and put away during instructional time unless a teacher gives permission for use.

  • Photos & Videos: Taking photos, videos, or audio recordings of others without their knowledge and permission is strictly prohibited.

  • Social Media: Use of social media during the school day is not allowed unless directly related to instruction and under supervision.

K–5 Specific Notes

  • Younger students will use school-provided devices under close supervision.

  • Personal devices are discouraged in elementary grades and may be collected during the school day if brought to school.

6–12 Specific Notes

  • Students may bring personal devices but must follow the rules for class time and appropriate use.

  • Repeated misuse may result in loss of privileges or additional consequences.

Enforcement

Misuse of technology or violation of this policy may result in:

  • Warnings or loss of device privileges

  • Parent/guardian contact

  • Disciplinary action per the Student Code of Conduct

Parent & Guardian Role

We encourage families to:

  • Talk with their children about responsible tech use

  • Monitor use of devices at home

  • Support school guidelines by setting healthy boundaries
